Temp staffing in Austin, without the agency

You need six people on Tuesday, not a service agreement. This page is for Austin businesses that want temporary labour by the day — warehouse surges, event load-ins, turnovers, site cleanup — and would rather agree a price with the people doing the work than negotiate a bill rate with a branch office.

We are not a staffing agency, and the difference is not marketing. It changes who employs the worker, who carries workers’ compensation, and what you are responsible for. That comparison is the first thing on this page, including the parts where an agency is the better answer.

Agency or marketplace: the honest comparison

Same job, two different structures. Neither is universally better.

Markup range for temporary and contract roles as published by staffing industry sources; it covers FICA, unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation and agency overhead, because the agency is the legal employer. Our 15% covers Stripe processing, payment protection and support, and includes no employer burden, because there is no employment relationship.

When a staffing agency is the better choice

We would rather lose the booking than have you find this out on site.

Use an agency, not us, when your site requires every worker to sit under a workers’ compensation policy; when you need an employer of record so the worker is on someone’s W-2; when the assignment runs for months rather than days and you want temp-to-hire; when the role needs a Texas licence, such as electrical, plumbing or HVAC; or when your procurement process needs an invoice on net-30 terms and a signed master service agreement. Those are real requirements and a marketplace does not meet them.

Use us when the work is short, the date is close, the scope is clear, and you would rather pay one transparent fee than a bill rate you have to reverse-engineer.

What Austin businesses actually book

Six categories cover most of it.

Warehouse & inventoryPickers, loaders and count support for a surge week or a cycle count.
Moving & load-inTwo to six people for a truck, an office move or a trade show load-in.
Event setup & serviceSetup crew, bartenders, servers and teardown for a single event date.
Property turnoversCleaning, haul-away and small repairs between tenants.
Construction cleanupSite cleanup, material moves and general labour around your trades.
Landscaping & groundsClearing, mulch, hauling and seasonal cleanups.

What it costs, with the arithmetic

Say you need four people for a Saturday load-in and you agree $180 each for the day. You pay $720 plus a 15% service fee of $108, so $828 in total. That money is authorised and held by Stripe before anyone starts, and it is released when you confirm the work is finished. There is no posting fee, no membership, no charge for a job that does not happen, and no separate invoice later.

The same four people through an agency at a comparable pay rate, with a 50% markup, would bill around $1,080 — and that number buys you an employer of record, workers’ compensation on the agency’s policy and payroll handled off your desk. Whether that is worth roughly $250 on this job depends entirely on your site rules and your risk appetite, which is a decision you should make with your own advisor, not with us.

How booking works

Four steps, no sales call.

1. Post the job. Date, address, how many people, what the work is, and what you are paying. Be specific about lifting, stairs, tools and dress code — vague posts get vague crews. 2. Get matched. Helpers near the site apply; you pick. 3. Money goes into escrow. Stripe holds it before the shift starts, so nobody works on a promise. 4. Confirm and it releases. Same day. If the work was not done, do not confirm.

Questions Austin employers ask

Is findyouronedayjob.com a staffing agency?

No, and the difference matters for your paperwork. A staffing agency employs the worker: it runs payroll, withholds taxes, carries workers’ compensation and sends you an invoice. We are a marketplace. You agree a price directly with an independent helper, we hold the money in escrow through Stripe until you confirm the work is done, and we charge a 15% service fee on top of the price you agreed. Nobody on this platform is our employee or yours by default. If you need an employer of record, an agency is the right call and we will say so rather than talk you out of it.

How fast can I get workers in Austin?

Often the same day or the next, depending on who is available and what the job is. General labour, moving help, cleaning and event staff fill fastest. Skilled trades and anything requiring a licence take longer, and we would rather tell you that up front than have a crew turn up who cannot do the work. A traditional agency typically quotes two to five business days for a light industrial placement, so speed is the main thing you gain here.

What does it cost compared to a staffing agency?

Staffing agencies bill your rate plus a markup that industry sources put at roughly 20% to 75% for temporary and contract roles. That markup is not profit alone: it covers the employer’s share of FICA, unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation and the agency’s overhead, because the agency is the legal employer. Our fee is a flat 15% on top of the price you agree with the helper, with no employer burden included, because there is no employment relationship. The two numbers are not measuring the same thing, and you should compare what each one buys you.

Is there a minimum number of hours or a contract?

No contract, no minimum term and no monthly commitment. You can book one helper for three hours on a Saturday and never come back. Agencies frequently apply four or eight hour minimums and annual service agreements, which is what makes them awkward for a one-off warehouse surge or a single event.

Who is responsible for workers’ compensation and taxes?

Because helpers are independent contractors, we do not withhold taxes for them and we are not their employer, so there is no employer-side workers’ compensation coverage running through us. Your own obligations depend on your business, the work, and how it is structured, and that is a question for your accountant or employment lawyer rather than for us. If your site requires everyone on it to be covered by a workers’ compensation policy, a staffing agency or a contractor with its own policy is the safer route.

What if the person who shows up cannot do the job?

Your payment sits in escrow with Stripe until you confirm the work is complete, so you are not paying first and hoping. If someone turns up and cannot do what was agreed, do not confirm the job, tell us, and the money goes back. That is the whole reason the money is held rather than handed over at the start.

Can I hire the same crew again?

Yes, and most businesses do. Once a crew has done a turnover or a load-out for you once, rebooking the same people is the difference between training someone every week and having a team that already knows your site. There is no fee for rebooking and no penalty for going direct later.

What kinds of work can I actually staff this way?

The reliable categories are general labour, moving and load-in, warehouse and inventory support, event setup and teardown, bartenders and servers, cleaning and property turnovers, construction site cleanup and landscaping help. What we will not pretend to cover is licensed trade work such as electrical, plumbing and HVAC, where Texas requires a licence held by the person doing the work.
